Educational imperatives are organically derived out of the state of a society. In turn, the educational imperatives dictate the design of the schools. The following tabular representation links the educational imperatives (which emerge out of the specific conditions of the society) and the key elements of the school designed to secure the educational imperatives.
The table presents the educational imperatives we derived as part of the discussion on the last question and the elements of the design of schools, in the early 19th century, as naturally and directly derived from the imperatives.
Societal conditions greatly determine the goals and ways of the schools. The current system of school education is a living example of how tight is the coupling of the state of a society and its educational imperatives and educational institutions. We already know that schools were scaled up to service certain emergent socio-economic needs of the society in 19th century – the industrial revolution.
‘Real education must ultimately be limited to men who insist on knowing. The rest is mere sheep herding.’
— Ezra Pound
