The Olympics is an utter waste of time

What pleasure would any father have in trying to run and reach the finishing line before his son on a playground? I have tried running several times with my son and never ever have had the desire to win over him, who is doing his very best to win and learning to run fast. What father has a heart to see his son lose a race and end up crying?

If this feeling of compassion we have for our children, which I am sure I share with people of many nationalities and cultures, is a common trait, then why have we created this periodical grand feast where the only question asked is who ate more than the others? Why can´t we all eat and feel some sort of satisfaction with the fact that no one went hungry? Why can’t we extend this feeling of empathy and realize that winning over or outcompeting others cannot always be considered a good social trait?
