JEE topper from Kerala wants to join IISc not IIT

KOCHI: A student from Kozhikode, Shafil Maheen N, got 4th rank in the highly competitive IIT-JEE (Advanced) engineering test. This is the first time a student from the state has made it to the top five in the engineering test, the results of which were announced Sunday.

As many as 1.74 lakh students registered for JEE (Advanced) this year. Of these, 6150 students are from Kerala and only 922 qualified. The last Keralite to make it to the top 10 was IAS officer Raju Narayana Swamy, who got 10th rank in JEE. He later joined IIT, Madras.

Though Shafil can choose to join any engineering course in any of the top IITs, he, interestingly, aspires to study mathematics at Indian Institute of Science(IISc). “Mathematics fascinates me. I want to get into research in mathematics. I have been chasing this dream since I was in class IX,” Shafil said.
